STANFORD, Calif. - Senior Jennifer Detmer tallied 13 kills and nine blocks as the 21st-ranked Stanford Cardinal downed Washington 3-0 tonight in Maples Pavilion. Game scores were 15-4, 15-10, 15-7.
Stanford improves to 9-6 overall, 4-4 in conference action, while the Huskies fall to 4-10, 0-7 in the Pac-10.
The Cardinal had a another stellar match at the net notching a 18 total blocks while holding the Huskies to just four blocks on the night. Stanford hit .328 for the match, its second-highest attack percentage for a match this season.
Stanford look good early posting a 7-2 lead over the Huskies in game one. The Cardinal got timely hitting from Tara Conrad and blocking for Jennifer Detmer. Stanford pushed the lead to 12-4 to force Washington to call a timeout. The Cardinal closed the door on Washington, 15-4, on a block by Lindsay Kagawa and Sara McGee.
Game two began a little differently with the Huskies claiming a 5-2 lead early on. Stanford would tie the game at six-all on a kill by junior Sara Sandrik and take the lead on a block by Kagawa and Detmer. The Cardinal then built a 13-9 lead that Washington could not overcome. Stanford won the game 15-10 on a kill by freshman middle blocker Sara McGee.
The Cardinal opened game three with seven straight points but Washington came back to score three straight points after a Huskie timeout. Stanford went on to build an 11-5 lead which they did not relinquish. They would win the game and the match on a kill by Sandrik.
Junior Tara Conrad notched a match-high 15 kills for the Cardinal. Sara McGee added 11 kills and five blocks while fellow freshman Sara Dukes had seven kills, 10 digs and five blocks on the evening. Sara Sandrik also added seven kills as well as three blocks.
The Huskies were led by Paige Benjamin who tallied 14 kills, followed by Lisa Underhill's 10 kills.
Stanford hosts California on Tuesday, October 10 at 7 p.m. at Maples Pavilion in continued Pac-10 play. The Cardinal will then face Long Beach State on Saturday, October 14 at 7 p.m. in a non-conference matchup.
