PULLMAN, Wash. - Sophomore Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) scored on a header from a free kick in the second overtime period as the No. 13 Stanford women's soccer team defeated Washington State 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Pullman. The Cardinal improves to 8-3-1 overall (1-1-0 Pac-10), while the Cougars fall to 8-4-0 (0-2-0 Pac-10).
The game remained scoreless throughout the 90 minutes of regulation and the first 15-minute overtime period. With just under five minutes to play in the second overtime, the Cardinal was awarded a free kick. Freshman Marcie Ward's (Alamo, CA) kick from the right corner found the head of Myers for the game winner. It was the midfielder's first goal of the season, while Ward tallied her team and conference-leading 11th assist of the year.
Senior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) had 10 saves in the game en route to her seventh shutout of the year. The shutout ties her career-high in a season (7), and she moves into second place on the all-time save list at Stanford with 200 for her career.
The Cougars held the shot advantage for the match 19-18, but the two overtime periods saw a swing between the two teams. Washington State outshot Stanford 7-2 in the first, while the Cardinal held a 5-0 advantage in the second. Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) led Stanford with eight shots.
Stanford returns to action Sunday afternoon when it faces conference rival and seventh-ranked California at 1:00 p.m. in Berkeley. The game will be televised on a tape delayed broadcast by Fox Sports Bay Area on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 1:00 p.m.
