Cardinal Unable To Find Winning Magic

STANFORD, Claif. - Jeff Powers and John Dorfi each scored two goals to lead the fifth-ranked UC Irvine water polo team to a 5-3 victory over fourth-ranked Stanford in a non-league game on Sunday at the Avery Aquatics Complex.

Powers opened the scoring for UC Irvine at the 5:08 mark of the second period, followed by a Dorfi goal at 4:39 to give the Anteaters a 2-0 lead. Stanford tied the game at 1:19 on a goal by Brian Darrow and at the 47-second mark by Peter Hudnut.

With the score tied at 3-3 entering the final period, Dorfi scored at 6:16 and Dan Klatt posted the insurance goal for UCI at 5:51.

Nick Ellis collected ten saves for Stanford, while Dan Hipp chalked up 15 for the Anteaters.

UCI raised its record to 8-3 overall, while Stanford fell to 6-5.
