Norfolk, Va. -- Stanford (13-11) fell to the 1st-ranked Old Dominion Lady Monarchs (22-1) 6-1 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Old Dominion, the number-one team in the country in both the NCAA and STX/NFHCA National Coaches poll, will advance to the second round of the tournament and will host the Final Four on Nov. 17 and 19.
Old Dominion began the scoring less than four minutes into the game with a goal b y Laura Stedman. NorPac Defensive Player of the Month, Melissa Stai, tallied the Cardinal's only goal to tie the game at 1-1. Old Dominion battled back and recorded three goals before the end of the half to give the Lady Monarchs a 4-1 lead at halftime. Marina DiGiacomo was the high-scorer for Old Dominion with three goals.
Junior goalkeeper, Rebecca Shapiro, closed out the 2000 season with a 22-save game, bringing her season total to a career-high 148 (more than twice as many as her 71 last season).
The Cardinal's only senior, Michelle Scott - NorPac Player of the Year, finished out her collegiate career by guiding Stanford to its first post-season appearance since 1995. Scott added an assist, brining her season total to six, second-highest for the Cardinal. After the match, she commented, "Everyone thought we could handle them out there...when we tied the game (at 1-1) it was exciting because it proved that we belonged out there."
