Fresno, Calif. - Jonathon Riley continued his championship season by helping lead the second-ranked Stanford men's cross country team to victory for the fifth straight year at the NCAA West Region Championships at Woodward Park on Saturday.Riley, who two weeks earlier captured the Pac-10 individual title, finished first among 151 runners by winning in a time of 30:40 over 10,000 meters. Two other Stanford runners finished in the Top-10, Thomas Murley in seventh place at 30:59, and Louis Luchini in eighth place at 31:04. Riley has won three of four races he has entered this year.The Cardinal men withstood the challenge of second place Arizona. Stanford finished with 58 points compared to Arizona with 62 points. The two teams in the West region advanced automatically to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 20 at Iowa State.The Cardinal women, also ranked #2 in the nation, easily defeated 25 other teams to win the NCAA West Region crown for a second straight season. The Cardinal tallied 58 points compared to runnerup Arizona State with 88. Stanford and Arizona State advance to the NCAA's at Iowa State. Two Stanford runners finished in the Top-10 to help key the Cardinal victory. Lauren Fleshman finished second over 6,000 meters in a time of 20:33, eight seconds behind the winner, Lisa Aguilera of Arizona State. Senior Cardinal Elena Villarreal placed fourth in a time of 20:37.
