Stanford, Calif. - The sixth-ranked Long Beach State water polo team battled back from three-goal deficit, held a five-goal lead, and then held off a Stanford rally in the final period to post an 11-8 upset victory over fifth-ranked Cardinal in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Saturday at the Avery Aquatics Complex.
Stanford jumped to a 4-1 first period lead, thanks in part to two goals by Onno Koelman. But it was all Long Beach State from there as the 49ers outscored Stanford, 9-1, to take a 10-5 lead with 4:46 left in the game. Chris Segesman proved unstoppable for Long Beach State as he scored three of the team's nine straight goals, giving him a total of 46 for the season.
Stanford scored three straight times late in the game to cut the margin to 10-8 with 2:37 to play, but Scott Miller iced the game for Long Beach State with a goal with 2:07 to play.
Stanford fell to 10-11 overall and 2-6 in league play. Long Beach State upped its season record to 14-8, and 4-3 in the MPSF.
The Cardinal closes its home season at noon on Sunday against UC Davis.
