Box Score

PROVO, Utah - The No. 16 Stanford women's soccer team fell to No. 8 BYU 5-0 in the second round of the 2000 NCAA Women's College Cup Saturday night at South Field.

The Cougars (19-3-1) advance to face Santa Clara (a 2-0 winner over California) in the third round next weekend at a site to be determined by NCAA officials. The Cardinal ends its season at 14-6-1.

After a scoreless first half, BYU opened the scoring just four minutes into the second when the Cardinal defense couldn't clear a Cougar corner kick. Farrah Hofheins grabbed a loose ball in front of the net, and her shot to the lower left corner beat Cardinal goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR).

BYU scored its second goal with 20 minutes left in the game on a Sara Reading goal. After a couple passes inside the box, Reading came up with the ball and fired a low shot to the back left for a 2-0 Cougar lead.

The Cougars added three goals in the final 10 minutes of the game when Kelly Hunsberger, Jennie Christianson and Donna Werts all found the back of the net.

Smolak, playing in her final game as a Cardinal, had a career-high 17 saves in the net. Jennifer Waldron had five saves for the Cougars.

The Cougars held a 13-5 shot advantage in the first half and limited Stanford to just one shot in the second half and 31-6 advantage in the game.

The Cardinal had two solid opportunities in the first half. Ten minutes into the game, Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) beat a defender across midfield and fired a shot from 30-yards out, which forced the BYU keeper to make a diving save. Ten minutes later, Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) found herself one-on-one with Waldron after a Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) header found some open space in front of the goal. Carlson collected the ball, but her shot went right to a charging Waldron.
