BERKELEY, Calif. - The fourth-ranked California water polo team defeated seventh-ranked Stanford in the annual Big Splash on Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Bears were led by three goals from Eldad Hazor. Stanford was paced by junior Onno Koelman and sophomore Peter Hudnut, who both scored two goals.
Hazor opened the match with two quick goals before Stanford rallied back behind two goals from Koelman to tied the game at 2-2 towards the end of the first quarter. After Cal and Stanford traded goals in the second quarter, Jerry Smith put the Bears up by one with 3:10 left in the first half. Stanford, however, had an opportunity to tie the game before the half with a player advantage on offense. Russell Bernstein's save at the buzzer brought the first half to a close with Cal leading 4-3.
The Cardinal wouldn't let up as Stanford traded goals with Cal in the third quarter to bring them within one at 5-4.
The fourth quarter belonged to Cal, though, as the Bears rallied behind goals from Joe Kaiser, Hazor and Attila Banhidy to put the Bears up 8-4.
Hudnut's lob shot with 32 seconds left in the match found the back of the cage for the Cardinal. However, the Bears dominance in the fourth quarter kept a victory out of reach for Stanford.
