Men's Soccer Defeats UIC 6-0 In NCAA Second Round

STANFORD, Calif. - Senior forward Corey Woolfolk scored two of Stanford's six second-half goals as the Cardinal defeated visiting Illinois-Chicago 6-0 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament at New Maloney Field. Stanford, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, improves to 18-2-1. UIC ends its season with an 18-4-2 record.

Stanford will now face No. 6 seed Southern Methodist, 3-1 winners over Kentucky, in the National Quarterfinals next weekend. The date, site and time of the match will be determined by the NCAA on Monday, Nov. 27.

After a scoreless first half, Woolfolk ignited a six-goal outburst with his first score at 47:25. Five minutes later, Derek Shanahan sent a cross to Matt Moses, who then redirected the ball to a streaking Lee Morrison for a 2-0 Stanford lead.

The Cardinal increased its lead to 4-0 with two goals in a span of :38 seconds. At the 66:35 mark, Roger Levesque sent a through ball to Ryan Nelsen, who then found Woolfolk for a breakaway goal. Woolfolk then returned the favor, feeding Levesque for an open shot at 67:13.

Stanford finished the second-half outburst with scores in the 81st and 83rd minutes. Mike Murphy volleyed in Shanahan's cross from the left for a 5-0 lead, then Nelsen scored off a rebound to end the scoring. Shanahan now has a goal and four assists thus far in the NCAA Tournament.

Goalkeepers Adam Zapala and Andrew Terris combined on Stanford's 16th shutout of the year, setting a new school single-season record. The Cardinal outshot UIC 19-5, forcing Flames keeper Chris Jamal to make a pair of saves.

Woolfolk, who also had a hat trick in the First Round of the tournament, now has scored five of his 12 goals in the postseason. For his career, Woolfolk ranks in Stanford's all-time top ten in goals (10th - 25), assists (6th - 20) and points (6th - 70).

With 18 wins, Stanford equaled the 1998 squad for the most victories in school history.
