Los Alamitos, Calif. - USC scored three straight goals in the third and fourth periods and then held on to defeat eighth-ranked Stanford to finish fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament on Sunday.
The Trojans took a 2-0 lead early in the first period, but Stanford evened the score late in the period. The two teams battled back and forth, with each team staying within a goal of the lead.
Stanford took its first lead of the game, 5-4, at 4:44 of the third period, but USC answered with three straight goals to take a 7-5 lead with 5:56 remaining in the game.
Peter Hudnut scored on a penalty shot with 3:39 left to cut the lead to one, but the Trojans held on for the win.
Stanford ended the season 13-14.
On Saturday, the Cardinal scored a 9-2 decision as Hudnut scored three times. The Cardinal jumped to a 8-0 lead before Long Beach State scored its first goal with 23 seconds remaining in the third period.
Hudnut led the team in scoring during the 2000 season with 44 goals. Brian Darrow tallied 24 goals, followed by Peter Osborn with 23 and Jeff Nesmith with 21.
