No. 15 Women's Soccer Rolls To Shutout Win Over Oregon

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 15 Stanford women's soccer team got two goals and an assist from freshman Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) as the Cardinal defeated Oregon 4-0 Friday night in a Pacific-10 Conference game at New Maloney Field. Stanford improves to 12-5-1 overall and 5-3-0 in conference, while the Ducks fall to 4-14-1 (1-6-1).

Ward tallied her 14th assist of the year, breaking Stanford's single-season record of 13, set in 1992 by U.S. National Team member Julie Foudy. Ward also put the Cardinal up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game. At the 7:19 mark, Ward scored on a breakaway when her low shot beat the Oregon goalkeeper.

Less than two minutes later, Ward tallied her second goal of the night and team-leading 12th of the season. Junior Amy Sauer (Spring, TX) started the play with a pass to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA), who found Ward inside the box for the score.

The Cardinal went up 3-0 when Wallis found the back of the net at the 31:20 mark. Wallis dribbled through the Oregon defense before firing a low shot to the corner for her 12th goal on the year, while Ward had the assist.

Freshman Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) scored her fifth goal of the year on a close-range shot in the second half. Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) and Wallis were credited with the assists.

Senior goalkeeper Carly Smolak (Lake Oswego, OR) and freshman Nicole Barnhart (Gilbertsville, PA) combined for the Cardinal's ninth shutout of the season. Both keepers recorded two saves. Oregon's Sarah Peters had seven saves on the night.

Stanford outshot the Ducks 15-5, including 9-2 in the first half. The Cardinal also had the advantage in corner kicks at 7-6. Oregon's Ann Westermark's led the Ducks with three shots on goal.

Pac-10 play concludes Sunday when the Cardinal hosts Oregon State at 10:30 a.m. Sunday is Senior Day for Stanford as six players will be recognized before their final regular season home game.
