Field Hockey Cruises Through NCAA Play-In Game

Stanford (13-10) traveled East following its NorPac Championship for a berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal met Holy Cross (14-7) on the Hart Center Astro Turf Field and defeated them 1-0 in the NCAA Play-In game.

Junior forward Erica Swesey, the Cardinal's leading scorer, capitalized on an opportunity late in the game. On a pass from Christina Williams, Swesey scored the game-winning goal with 1:36 left in the game. The Crusaders had a chance to score on a penalty stroke in the first half, but senior co-captain Kim Ferguson's shot hit the right post.

Stanford junior goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro tallied three saves on the day, bringing her season total to a career-high 126.

Stanford will be playing in the NCAA Tournament this weekend on Sat. Nov. 11. The time and opponent will be announced tonight, Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. Stanford last made a post-season appearance in 1995, but lost its opening round game to Penn State. This is the Cardinal's seventh NCAA appearancea all-time.
