STANFORD, Calif. - Sixteenth-ranked Stanford University (14-5-1) scored two goals in the opening four minutes and never looked back en route to a 4-1 victory over visiting San Jose State University (10-13-1) in the first round of the NCAA Women's College Cup at New Maloney Field. Freshman Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA/Carondelet HS) scored a pair of goals for the Cardinal, while sophomore Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA/Los Gatos HS) and freshman Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA/Santa Monica HS) had a goal and an assist apiece.
Stanford will face Brigham Young University in the second round on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. (PT) in Provo, Utah. The winner of the Stanford-BYU match faces the winner of the California-Santa Clara match on the weekend of Nov. 17-19.
Stanford jumped onto the board just 2:26 into the match on an unassisted score. The goal was Oliveira's sixth of the season.
The Cardinal struck again just 49 seconds later - at the 3:15 mark - when Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Ward scored off a feed from Wallis. It was later Wallis' turn at 17:34 when she drove home an Oliveira pass to give the hosts a commanding 3-0 advantage.
San Jose State scored its only goal of the match at 33:08 when senior Julie Brum (San Jose, CA/Piedmont Hills HS) scored on an assist from sophomore Jennifer Mescher (Mission Viejo, CA/Mission Viejo HS).
The Cardinal wrapped up the evening's score before the intermission when Ward scored her team-leading 14th goal on a direct kick just outside the penalty box at 37:49. The direct kick came as a result of a foul on the Spartans that drew a red card, and the visitors played one person down for the final 50-plus minutes.
Stanford outshot the Spartans 9-2 in the second half, but neither team found the net as the Cardinal wrapped up its fifth victory in its last six matches.
