The second-ranked Stanford men's swimming and diving team opened the conference season with a 129-109 win over No. 12 Arizona State today at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center in Tempe, Arizona. The Cardinal improve to 4-0 overall, 1-0 Pac-10.
Senior Steven Brown led the Cardinal with victories in the 400 IM (3:53.90) and the 200 fly (1:49.89). Freshmen Markus Rogan and Peter Marshall went 1-2 in the 200 back with times of 1:44.55 and 1:47.35 respectively. Rogan's time of 1:44.55 is the second-fastest time in the national this year.
Sophomore Greg Long and freshman Matt Sorlien finished 1-2 for the Cardinal in the 500 free turning in times of 4:30.19 and 4:33.15 respectively. Senior Adam Messner took top honors in the 200 free (1:37.38) while freshman Andrew Schnell placed third with a season-best time of 1:39.93.
The Stanford relay team of Randall Bal, Anthony Robinson, Bobby O'Bryan and Jeff Guyman placed first in the 400 Medley Relay (3:16.45) to open the meet. The time provisionally qualifies them for NCAAs and is the sixth fastest time in the nation this year.
ASU junior Simon MacDonald edged Stanford sophomore Randall Ball by .100th of a second in the 50 free with a time of 20.66 while freshmen Marshall and Rogan went 1-2 in the 1000 free with times of 9:19.99 and 9:23.57 respectively.
Stanford sophomore diver Gavin Olmstead finished second on the one-meter (286.50) and third on the three-meter (305.63) to lead the Cardinal divers.
The Cardinal face Arizona tomorrow at 1 p.m. MST in continued conference action.
