SEATTLE, Wash. - Stanford gymnasts won individual titles in two events, including a sweep of the top six spots on vault, while freshman Lindsay Wing captured the all-around crown as the No. 10 Cardinal won the Fox Sports Northwest Challenge in Seattle, Wash. Stanford scored a season-best 196.050 to defeat Pac-10 foe Washington (195.925) and Seattle Pacific (191.875).
Wing scored a 9.875 to win on beam, her second title on that apparatus and her third individual victory in three collegiate competitions. She also tied for second on bars and finished fourth on vault en route to a career-high 39.375 all-around mark.
Robin Phelps, another Cardinal rookie, landed a 9.900 on vault for her first career individual championship. Phelps set the standard for a dominating Stanford performance on vault, as five other Cardinal gymnasts finsihed second through sixth: Caroline Fluhrer (9.850), Shelly Goldberg (9.825), Wing (9.800), Jen Exaltacion (9.775) and Lise L?veill? (9.750). Fluhrer also finished second on bars.
Exaltacion, a senior, turned in the second-best all-around performance of her career, finishing in third place with a 39.300 after tying for second on both beam and bars. Goldberg, a freshman, sparked Stanford to its best showing on floor this season with a second-place 9.925 mark. She was followed closely by fellow freshman L?veill?, who placed fourth on floor (9.900), second on beam (9.850) and sixth in the all-around (38.850).
Washington, which began the year ranked No. 16 but had since fallen out of the polls, won the other two events. Stacey Wong scored a 9.975 to win on bars, while Mandi Klug was victorious with a 9.950 floor routine.
Stanford is next in action on Friday, Feb. 2, when it hosts No. 15 Minnesota in a 7:30 p.m. dual meet at Burnham Pavilion.
