TUCSON, Ariz. - Stanford senior golfer Jimmy Lee (Coral Springs, FL) shot a two-under par 69 on Monday in the opening round of the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate, hosted by the University of Arizona at The Raven at Sabino Springs golf course (par 71, 6,776 yards).
Stanford is in eighth place of the team standings with a 293 and is 17 strokes behind the leader, USC (276). Ohio State (283), Arizona State (286), Cal (286) and South Carolina (290) round out the top five.
Lee carded a 32 on the front nine and a 37 on the back to find himself two strokes off the lead. Four golfers shot 67s and are tied for first in the prestigious tournament, which includes four teams ranked in the Top 25 (three teams in the Top 10).
Stanford, competing in its first tournament of the spring season, sent seven golfers to Arizona (five-man squad and two individuals). Senior Eric Dahlberg (Fort Worth, TX) and sophomore Ron Won (Irvine, CA), both playing as individuals, are tied for 22nd after shooting 72s (+1).
Senior Alex Aragon (Torrey Pines, CA) recorded a 74, while Jim Seki (Honolulu, HI) and Blake Mastalir (Englewood, CO) both posted rounds of 75. Junior Philip Rowe (Cornwall, UK) came in with a 77.
The two-day tournament was scheduled to go two rounds on Monday, but had to postpone play due to darkness. The remainder of round two and the third and final round are slated for Tuesday with a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. (MST).
