Jan. 6, 2001

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama - The No. 7-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team opened its 2001 season in impressive fashion, taking third place - just 5/100th's behind - at the prestigious Super Six Challenge in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. No. 5 Alabama and No. 2 Georgia shared the meet title with a score of 195.300, barely edging out the 195.300 posted by the Cardinal. All six teams at the meet were ranked in the Top-10 of the GymInfo Preseason Coaches' Poll, as the Crimson Tide, GymDogs and Cardinal defeated No. 3 Michigan (194.475), No. 10 Florida (194.425) and No. 9 Penn State (193.275). The meet drew a crowd of 9,418.

As a team, Stanford took second on both vault and bars, finished third on beam and tied for fifth on floor.

In its opening meet, Stanford received a strong performance from its lone senior, Jen Exaltacion, and outstanding debuts from its freshmen. Exaltacion, on the strength of a tenth-place finish on beam, tied for fourth in the all-around competition with a 38.950 mark.

Three Cardinal freshman competed in the all-around, led by Lindsay Wing, who won a share of the individual beam title and placed sixth on vault en route to a fourth-place in her first collegiate competition. Robin Phelps finished twelfth (38.550) after placing third on vault and eighth on bars. The third Stanford rookie, Caroline Fluhrer, enjoyed an eighth-place finish on bars and a tenth-place mark on vault to finish 18th in the all-around (38.200).

The Cardinal finished second on beam as a pair of freshmen - Lise L?veill? and Wing - both scored a 9.850 to share individual title honors with Georgia's Kristi Lichey and Michigan's Karina Senior. L?veill?, who scored a 9.850 in all three of her events, also placed seventh on both floor and bars.

Stanford is next in action on Friday, January 19, when it hosts top-ranked and defending national champion UCLA at Maples Pavilion. The meet, which features a combined five 2000 Olympians, will begin at 7:30 p.m.
