Feb. 9, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - In a matchup of Pac-10 powerhouses both ranked in the Top-25 nationally, Stanford freshman Lindsay Wing led the No. 5 Cardinal to a 197.050 - 196.725 victory over No. 15 Arizona State at Burnham Pavilion. Wing continued her phenomenal early-season success by winning three events - vault, beam and floor - and capturing the all-around title with a 39.675, matching former Cardinal great Amy Murakami for the second-highest score in Stanford history.

Stanford improves to 7-3 overall (2-1 in dual meets) with its sixth victory of the season over a ranked opponent. Arizona State falls to 3-3 overall with a 3-1 mark in dual meets.

The Cardinal has now scored over a 197.000 in each of its last two meets, pushing its season average to 196.100.

Behind a solid effort on bars, Arizona State took a narrow lead after the first rotation, 49.225-48.900, however, Stanford's upperclassmen would storm back in the second. Senior Jen Exaltacion matched her career high with a 9.950 to win on bars, while junior Becky Meldrum tied for third with a career-high 9.900.

A trio of Cardinal freshmen led the way in the third rotation, as Wing matched the all-time school record with a 9.975 on beam. Lise L?veill? finished second with a 9.925 mark, while Robin Phelps took fifth at 9.850.

Clinging to a narrow 147.725 - 147.425 lead entering the final rotation, Stanford equaled its season-high with a 49.325 on floor. Wing won her second consecutive floor competition with a 9.925, edging L?veill? (9.900) and ASU's Kelly Cowley (9.900). A pair of Cardinal gymnasts - Exaltacion and Caroline Fluhrer - each had a 9.850 routine to tie for fifth.

Fluhrer also finished second on vault with a 9.875, while L?veill? tallied a 39.425 all-around score to place second.

Maggie Germaine finished third on vault, fourth on floor and third in the all-around to lead Arizona State. Laura Moon (bars) and Rhonda Robinette (beam) each had second-place finishes for the Sun Devils, while Cowley and Amber Giorgianni tied for fourth on vault.

Stanford is next in action on Sunday, February 18, when it travels to Berkeley to face No. 17 California. The meet is a dual meet with the Cardinal and Golden Bear men, and will begin at 2:00 p.m.
