Cardinal Water Polo Captures Stanford Invitational Title With 7-6 Win Over UCLA

STANFORD, Calif. - An Ellen Estes goal with :41 seconds remaining gave the Stanford women's water polo team a 7-6 win over UCLA to take the championship of the inaugural Stanford Invitational on Sunday at the Avery Aquatic Center.

UCLA tied the game at 6-6 with just over 3:00 minutes to play in the game when Anne Stachowski scored a 6-on-5 goal. The Cardinal came up big when Brenda Villa's steal stopped the Bruins with 1:02 left. Stanford called a timeout and set up a final play, leading to Estes' backhanded goal past UCLA goalkeeper Jaime Hipp.

Stanford jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first quarter on three Julie Gardner assists. Villa scored two of her four goals in the first while Kelly Shouey also tallied a goal in the first quarter.

The Bruins came back in the second quarter as Kelly Heuchan, Elaine Zivich and Stachowski all found the back of the net to even the score at 3-3 for halftime.

The third quarter saw the Cardinal extend its lead to 5-3 as Margie Dingeldein and Villa recorded goals, but the Bruins wouldn't let down. UCLA's Robin Beauregard fired a goal with :03 seconds left in the third, and tied the game at 5-5 less than a minute later. Stanford goalkeeper Jackie Frank was solid in the net, registering nine saves. Hipp had five for the Bruins.

The competitive match had 15 kickouts, 12 of which were Stanford's. The Cardinal lost two players for the game, Hilary Gallogly and Dingeldein, while Dani Bell and Shouey both had two ejections. UCLA had just three kickouts the entire game. The Bruins were 2-for-12 on power play opportunities.

In other tournament action in the afternoon session, Calgary and the Cal B squad played to a 5-5 tie in the seventh place game. The Bears were up 5-0 heading into the fourth quarter before the Renegades exploded for five goals in less than three minutes. Cora Campbell had two scores while Kimberley Campbell, Trina Campbell and Alison Braden each had one. Shannon Braun led the Bears with two goals. Courtney Devenish, Ashley Miller and Marissa Muller tallied a goal apiece. Lauren Dennis picked up five saves for Cal in the net while Calgary's Megan Jeffery had two saves.

In the fifth place game, UC Davis scored four goals in the first quarter and five in the third en route to a 12-5 win over Pacific. Tiffany Hodgens paced the Aggies with four goals and Anne Harter chipped in with three and Kim Parker two. Pacific's goals came from Jessica Schroeder (2) and Kristen Cockerill (2). Tiger keeper Julie Ross had strong performance with nine saves while Karly Watson had five for the Aggies.

Cal took the third place game with an 8-3 win over San Jose State. The Bears led 3-2 at the half behind Erika Lorenz's three first-half goals. Lorenz tallied another score in the third quarter, and Brenna Fleener and Heather Petri recorded goals as well, giving Cal a 6-2 lead. The Spartans had goals from Inna Fedoseyeva, Cassie Rawsin and Neva West. Cal's Fana Fuqua was credited with six saves and SJSU's Melanie Nichols had five.
