No. 7 Women's Gymnastics Sets School Records In 197.425-195.640 Win Over No. 13 Minnesota

Feb. 2, 2001

STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 7-ranked Stanford women's gymnastics team continued to stake its claim as one of the nation's best, establishing school records for beam and overall scores en route to a 197.425-195.650 victory over No. 13 Minnesota at Burnham Pavilion.

The Cardinal broke a two-year old team overall record, bettering the 197.275 scored against Massachusetts on Mar. 12, 1999. Stanford posted four 9.9's or better on beam, led by freshmen Lise L?veill? (9.950) and Lindsay Wing (9.925), to score a program-best 49.500. The previous high score was 49.350, set at Boise State on Feb. 13, 2000.

Stanford recorded a 9.900 or better 10 times, while the team score was the second-best in the country in 2001. Only top-ranked UCLA, with a 197.500, has scored higher.

Stanford gymnasts won all four events, while Wing fashioned one of the best all-around meets in school history. She won the floor exercise with a 9.950 - the sixth-best mark in program history - finished second on beam with a 9.925 (tied for second in Stanford history), and won the all-around with a 39.625, the fourth-highest score ever by a Cardinal gymnast.

Fellow freshman Caroline Fluhrer also had a fantastic meet, putting her name in the Stanford record books while winning both bars (9.950, tied for fourth) and vault (9.925, tied for fifth). L?veill?'s score on beam was the second highest in program annals.

Stanford also set a season-high with a 49.325 on floor, behind Wing's victory and second-place finishes by L?veill? and senior Jen Exaltacion. Five of the top six gymnasts on bars were Cardinal, as Fluhrer's victory was followed by Exalacion, junior Becky Meldrum, L?veill? and Wing.

The Cardinal also received solid efforts from junior Katy Herbert, who placed third with a 9.900 on beam, along with freshmen Shelly Goldberg and Robin Phelps, each of whom tied for fourth on vault.

Minnesota's MaryAnne Kelley finished in the top three in three of the four events and took second with an all-around score of 39.525.

Stanford returns to action on Friday, Feb. 9, when it hosts Arizona State in a Pac-10 dual meet at Burnham Pavilion. The meet will begin at 7:30 p.m.
