No. 5 Stanford Women's Gymnastics Defeats Arizona, 196.300 - 196.200

Feb. 23, 2001

TUCSON, Ariz. - Freshman Lindsay Wing captured the vault title and senior Jen Exaltacion won on bars to lead No. 5 Stanford to a narrow 196.300 - 196.200 road victory over Pac-10 foe Arizona. The Cardinal (8-3 overall, 4-1 dual meet) won its fourth consecutive dual meet and is now 3-1 in Pac-10 dual competitions. Counting Stanford's wins over Washington and Seattle Pacific in the Fox Sports Northwest Challenge, the Cardinal has not lost since it fell to top-ranked UCLA on Jan. 19.

Wing's career-high 9.950 performance on vault - which tied for the third-best score in school history - led Stanford to a season-best 49.275 on the apparatus. Three freshmen Cardinal gymnasts finished in a four-way tie for third at 9.850: Shelly Goldberg, Caroline Fluhrer and Lise L?veill?. Robin Phelps contributed a 9.775 and Exaltacion hit a 9.725 as no Cardinal scored below 9.700.

Stanford's strong effort on vault was needed, as Arizona captured the individual and team bars titles. The Wildcats' Kara Fry and Nikki Beyschau each scored a 9.950 to tie for first, while Randi Lijenquist tied for third at 9.900. Fluhrer also had a 9.900, followed in fifth place by Wing (9.875) and in sixth by Becky Meldrum (9.850).

Despite Exaltacion's winning score of 9.925 on beam, a fourth-place finish by Katy Herbert and a fifth-place effort by Phelps, Arizona had the better team score at 48.975 - 48.700.

The Cardinal won the meet with its floor exercise. Stanford gymnasts owned four of the top seven scores en route to a 49.100 team score, better than the Wildcats' 48.825 mark. Wing finished in a three-way tie for second at 9.900, and was followed in spots five through seven by Exaltacion (9.850), Phelps (9.825) and L?veill? (9.800).

Stanford returns to Burnham Pavilion next weekend for its final two home meets of the season. The Cardinal will host No. 19 Oregon State on Friday, March 2, and No. 9 Brigham Young on Saturday, March 3. Both meets will begin at 7:30 p.m., while on Saturday, Stanford will honor senior Jen Exaltacion in her final home competition.
