DENVER, Colo. - In its first non-conference game of the season the Cardinal defeated Denver 12-11. After trailing for most of the game, the Pioneers tied it at 10 with 11:18 to play in the game. The next two minutes proved to be all the Cardinal needed, however, with two quick goals to clinch the victory. A close match-up, this puts Denver at 1-2 on the season and Stanford at 4-0 overall, 3-0 WWLL.
Leading the way today with a hat-trick apiece were junior tri-captain Caroline Osterwise and freshman Abbi Hills, who each put in two goals in first half and one goal in the second. Osterwise, who led the team in scoring last year with 34 goals and 14 assists, now has 4 goals on the season and Hills has 7 goals. Also powering the Cardinal offense today were sophomore Liz Lanese and senior tri-captain Katherine Barnes. Lanese scored the first Stanford goal at 1:34 into the game and the goal at 49:27 that broke the tie. The final goal that put Stanford over the top, with 9:50 to play, was Barnes' second of the game and her eighth goal this season, the team's highest.
On the defensive end, freshman Katie Grube led the team with 5 groundballs, 2 caused turnovers and 4 draw controls. Goalkeeper Rachael Neumann finished with 6 saves in goal and rookie Sara Shamos tallied 7 saves in her first appearence for Stanford. This is the Cardinal's fourth win under first year head coach Michele Uhlfelder (Maryland '91), a former National Team player.
Stanford returns to Pioneer field tomorrow at 1pm MT to take on the George Mason Patriots. The Patriots finished last season ranked 19th nationally by the IWLCA.
