Stanford, CA - In a high-scoring match this afternoon, the Cardinal pulled out a 14-12 victory over the Davidson Wildcats. The game started with 1 quick goal by each team in the first two minutes. The Wildcats entered the middle of the first half strong, with 4 goals over 16 minutes, but the Cardinal found its rhythm and scored 7 unanswered goals to end the half. After a half-time score of 9-5, the Cardinal answered 2 early Davidson goals, with 4 of their own. With 8:19 remaining in the game Stanford looked to have the game sewed up with a 14-8 lead, but the Wildcats offered a scare, scoring 4 goals in the next 6 minutes . The Cardinal defense stepped up in the end and shutdown the Cats for the final minute and a half, recording their fifth win of the season.
Powering the Cardinal on offense were senior tri-captain Katharine Barnes , junior Liz Britt and sophomore Liz Lanese , who put in three goals a piece. Barnes now has 12 goals, the highest for the team this season, followed closely by Lanese and freshman Abbi Hills , who each have 11. Also boosting the offense, sophomore Addie Strumolo and freshman Noor Dawood each tallied 3 assists today. Dawood also had 4 draw controls and junior Emily Rodriguez added 5 draw controls, 2 groundballs and 1 goal. On the defensive end, senior tri-captain Dana Katter recorded 3 caused turnovers and 1 groundball.
Stanford is now 5-1 overall this season and 3-0 in the WWLL. This game was the first of a three-game homestand this week. The Cardinal returns to action on Friday when they host the Vanderbilt Commodores at 3pm on Maloney Field.
