20th Ranked Women's Lacrosse Crushes California

Stanford, CA - The Cardinal Women's Lacrosse team, ranked 20th by the IWLCA, came away with a 13-10 victory today against Bay Area rival California. This win marks Stanford's third in a row vs. the Golden Bears, after defeating them in the first round of the WWLL playoffs last season and beating them in this year's season opener at California. The Cardinal is now 9-3 overall and 4-0 in the WWLL, California is 8-5 overall, 1-3 WWLL.

Leading all scorers today were sophomore Addie Strumolo (Norfolk, CT/Taft School) and freshman Abbi Hills (Lakewood, CO/Colorado Academy) with 3 goals each. Strumolo scored the first Stanford goals in both halves and a key goal at 9:58 into the first half to start the Cardinal on a 5-goal run. Sophomore Liz Lanese (St. Louis, MO/Mary Institute & St. Louis CDS) also sparked the offense with 2 goals and 3 assists. Hills and Lanese added 4 groundballs apiece and senior tri-captain Katharine Barnes (Northhampton, MA (Deerfield Academy) recorded 2 caused turnovers.

Up 8-6 at halftime, Stanford stayed strong and kept the Bears at least 2 goals away for the remainder of the game. Starting goalkeeper Rachael Neumann (Woodbury, NY/Syosset HS) finished with 13 saves and freshman Sara Shamos (Denver, CO/Colorado Academy) came in with 10:34 left in the game to record 2 saves. This was the final home game for the Cardinal this season, next Saturday they travel to Aggie Field to take on UC Davis at 1pm.
