Central Michigan Bats Come Alive In 10-0 Win Over Hofstra

STANFORD, Calif. - Fourth-seeded Central Michigan exploded for 10 runs on 10 hits asthe Chippewas defeated sixth-seeded Hofstra, 10-0 in five innings, in the first game of Day Two of the NCAA Softball Regional at Stanford's Boyd & Jill Smith Family Stadium on Friday morning. The loss eliminates Hofstra from the Regional as the Pride finishes the season with a 37-26 record. Central Michigan improves to 37-19 and advances to face top-seeded Stanford this afternoon at 4:00 p.m.

Central Michigan scored all 10 of its runs in the bottom of the second. They sent 15 batters to the plate in the inning and collected nine hits. Kim Burke started things off with the first of four consecutive singles. Burke singled to right and Jennifer Skuta, Karly McCormack and Lindsay Horvath all had base hits up the middle. Sarah Hamilton then walked to load the bases for Becky Manson, who singled to shallow center for a 3-0 Chippewa lead.

Hofstra's Alexis Alcantara relieved starting pitcher Kelly Blois at this point, but the Chippewas continued to rally as Amy Morrison's sacrifice fly to right was dropped, scoring one run. Then Hope Robertshaw roped a double to the left centerfield fence, scoring three runs for a 7-0 CMU lead. Burke, who came to the plate for the second time in the inning, followed her single with an RBI double to right center. Skuta walked and McCormack's line drive down the third base line chased Alcantara.

Shannon Luther became the third Hofstra pitcher of the game and was greeted by Horvath's RBI single through the right side. But Luther got a ground out to end the inning, but not before the Chippewas put 10 runs on the board.

Amber Pulchalski started and pitched three shutout innings for the Chippewas, giving up two hits. Wendy Stephens pitched the fourth and the fifth and didn't allow a hit. Pulchalski picks up the win and improves to 26-8.

Blois took the loss in the circle for Hofstra. She went 1 1/3 inning to fall to 13-11. She gave up six runs on five hits. Alcantara lasted 1/3 of an inning and gave up four runs on three hits while Luther went 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
