OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - The sixth-seeded Stanford softball team scored one unearned run in the second and held on for a 1-0 win over eighth-seeded California in the Women's College World Series on Saturday night at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. The Cardinal (54-15-1) advances to face top-seeded Arizona on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (PT). The Golden Bears are eliminated from the Series and end the season at 54-18.
The Cardinal scored the only run of the game in the second. Jessica Allister drew a leadoff walk, and Jessica Draemel went in to pinch run. Jenni Shideler's sacrifice bunt moved Draemel to second. Then Michelle Thiry's grounder to short was missed, allowing Draemel to score from second for the 1-0 Stanford lead.
Stanford had just one hit in the game - Robin Walker's lead off single in the bottom of the first. The Cal pitchers limited the Cardinal to five base runners.
The Stanford defense played a big part in the game. Cal had the leadoff runner on in the fourth and the fifth, but a few big plays to keep the Bears from scoring. In the fourth, Walker turned a double play to end the inning. In the fifth, Jessica Mendoza robbed Paige Bowie of an extra base hit, and in the seventh, Cassi Brangham made a diving catch in left.
Dana Sorensen started for the Cardinal and went five scoreless innings. She gave up four hits and struck out three to improve to 27-5. Jaime Forman-Lau came on in the sixth and didn't give up a hit. She picked up her fifth save of the year.
Nicole DiSalvio started in the circle for Cal and went 2 1/3 innings. She gave up one unearned run and one hit to take the loss. She falls to 21-8. Jocelyn Forest pitched the remaining 3 2/3 innings without giving up a hit. She allowed just one base runner (a fielder's choice) and struck out four.
The Cardinal is now 3-1 against Cal this year. Six of the 11 Stanford runs have been unearned.
Stanford is 0-3 against Arizona this year, with the last meeting going 15 innings. The Wildcats won the first game 7-0 and the second 8-1. The third game was tied 3-3 before Arizona scored two runs in the top of the 15th for the 5-3 win.
