STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford University Athletic Board honored 36 of the university's top student-athletes at its annual awards luncheon on Thursday afternoon.

The luncheon was highlighted by senior women's swimmer and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Misty Hyman receiving the board's highest honor - The Al Masters Award - for attaining the highest standards of athletic performance, leadership and academic achievement.

Hyman pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the entire Sydney Olympics by winning the gold medal in the 200-meter butterfly. Collegiately, Hyman was a 12-time NCAA Champion, and became just the second swimmer in the history of the program to earn the maximum possible 28 All-American honors (Catherine Fox is the other). The International Relations major was also a 17-time Pac-10 Champion.

The Donald Kennedy Award - presented to the senior athlete(s) who best exhibits the combination of excellent academics, strong athletic ability and a commitment to community service - was shared by Michelle Scott (Field Hockey) and Hilary Homeyer (Women's Golf). Scott, who was named the 2000 Nor-Pac Conference Player of the year, has been accepted to serve in the Peace Corps for the next two years in Africa. She has also volunteered with Kids For Cancer, Amnesty International, U.S. Veterans Hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. She is a Human Biology major with a 3.59 grade point average. Homeyer is a four-time All-American and represented the United States at the 2000 World Amateur Championships. She was a District VIII Academic All-American this season, and is both an Economics and Psychology major with a 3.82 grade point average.

The Stanford Athletic Board Award for outstanding female senior went to Sally Glynn (Track & Field), Stephanie Keever (Golf) and Shannon Montague (Synchronized Swimming). Glynn, who is the most decorated female track athlete in Stanford history, earned 11 NCAA All-American honors and ranks in the top 10 in program history in three different events. Keever was a First Team All-American this spring who represented the U.S. at the 2000 World Amateur Championships, Montague was named the 2001 Synchronized Swimming Collegiate Athlete of the Year, and is a four-time All-American and two-time Academic All-American.

The Biff Hoffman Award for outstanding male senior was awarded to both Anthony Robinson (swimming) and Michael Stember (Track & Field). Robinson finished his Stanford career as a 20-time All-American and set a world record in the 50-meter breaststroke at the U.S. Nationals in April. He will represent the U.S. in the 100-meter breaststroke at the World Championships in Japan next month. Stember was a member of the 2000 United States Olympic Team and is one of the premier middle distance runners in the nation. He won 10 career All-American honors, and is the Stanford record holder in both the 800 and 1,500 meters.

The award for most competitive female senior was divided three ways, while the equivalent male award was split two ways. The female honor - the Pam Strathairn Award - was given to Katharine Barnes (Lacrosse), Kris Koblik (Water Polo) and Erin Sones (Diving). Barnes was the co-captain and leading scorer on the 2001 team that was ranked among the nation's top 20 for the first time in program history. Koblik helped lead the women's water polo team to the first undefeated regular season in the sport's history, and earned a pair of All-American honors in her career (1999 & 2000). Sones was the 2001 NCAA Platform Diving Champion, was a seven-time All-American and a two-time Pac-10 Platform Diving Champion (1999 & 2001).

Mendez was one of the all-time best 3-point shooters in Stanford history, and helped the guide the Cardinal to a 114-19 record, three Pac-10 titles and a NCAA Final Four appearance during his tenure. Pitts is one of the most decorated wide receivers in Pac-10 and Stanford history, and is one of just four players in the history of the conference to record over 3,000 career receiving yards.

The Block "S' Honors Award for Men and Women, which honors the male and female senior letter-winners with the highest cumulative grade point average, went to Nicholas Furrow (Fencing) and Ann Ramsey (Cross Country/Track & Field). Ramsey carries a 3.98 grade point average, while Furrow owns a 3.86.
