July 19, 2001

Stanford University Athletic Director Ted Leland announced on Thursday that Associate Athletic Directors Debi Gore-Mann and Darrin Nelson have been promoted to Senior Associate Athletic Director, effective immediately. In addition, Leland announced that Lucius Barker has been appointed as Stanford's interim faculty athletic representative.

"This reorganization allows us to be more efficient as a department, as well as rewarding great performance," Leland said. "Debi and Darrin are integral parts of this department. We're also very excited about the addition of Lucius Barker as our faculty athletic representative."

Gore-Mann is in her third year in the Stanford Athletic Department as the Associate Athletic Director for Operations and Finance, and was named Senior Women's Administrator in 2000. Gore-Mann manages the Athletic Department's financial budget of approximately $45 million. She oversees the Facilities, Operations and Events department, budgeting and accounting, and approves all contracts involving the Stanford Athletic Department. She also acts as the liaison between the Athletic Department, University offices and several advisory/volunteer committees. Gore, who graduated from Stanford with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering in '82 and returned to earn her MBA in '87, was a standout point guard for the Cardinal women's basketball program from 1979-82.

Nelson, who is one of the top football players in Stanford history, returned to The Farm in 1997 as the Assistant Athletic Director for Community Relations. Since August of 1999, Nelson has served as Associate Athletic Director for External Relations. In his current position, Nelson oversees the Development, Marketing and Media Relations Departments for Stanford Athletics, as well as all community outreach programs. As a Stanford athlete, Nelson was a First Team All-American in 1981 and a four-time All-Pac-10 selection. Nelson, who graduated from Stanford in 1982, still holds school records for career touchdowns (40) and career rushing yards (4,033), and became the first player in NCAA history to rush for over 1,000 yards and catch 50 passes in a season. After leaving Stanford, he had a successful 11-year National Football League career with the Minnesota Vikings and San Diego Chargers.

Barker is a professor in Stanford's Department of Political Science, and is co-chairman of The Presidents Council of The American Political Science Association. Barker replaces Jerry Porras, who retired from the position in June after a successful 11-year tenure.
