Stanford, Calif. - Stanford (0-1-0) opened its 2001 field hockey season on Sunday with a tight 1-0 loss to Delaware (2-0-0) on Sunday at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf. The teams were engaged in a scoreless battle until Delaware's Leah Geib scored unassisted on her own rebounded shot with only 4:55 remaining in the game to give the Fightin' Blue Hens their second straight victory.

Third-ranked Maryland (2-0-0) scored an 8-0 victory over Pacific (0-2-0) in the first game of Sunday's NCAA field hockey doubleheader on The Farm.

Stanford will next host Maryland this Tuesday, August 28 (1:00 p.m.) in a game to be televised on a tape-delayed basis by Silicon Valley Community Communications.

On Sunday, Stanford goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro recorded eight saves as Delaware edged the Cardinal in shots, 11-7. Stephanie Judefind (four first half saves) and Heidi Hibshman (one second half save) split the game in the net for Delaware.

Lucy Morris led the Terrapins' freshmen barrage by scoring six points on two goals and two assists, while freshman Colleen Barbieri came off the bench to score a pair of goals for the second straight contest. Freshmen Sara Silvetti and Beth Hafer also scored goals as rookie Terrapins accounted for a total of 14 points.

Silvetti opened the scoring with 27:38 remaining in the first half on a shot to the right of diving Pacific goalkeeper Lisa Beach. Morris increased the margin to 2-0, scoring unassisted just over four minutes later at 23:36. Barbieri tallied unassisted at 21:17 and All-American Autumn Welsh collected a ball off the stick of Barbieri before knocking it into the cage with 17:30 to go. Morris finished Maryland's first half scoring 4:59 before the break to give the Terrapins a 5-0 halftime advantage.

Angie Klingerman opened the second half scoring for Maryland, scoring with an assist from Rachel Hiskins with 30:46 remaining in the contest. Klingerman then delivered a sharp pass to Hafer as the freshmen eluded a defender and then knocked in her first career goal with 16:23 remaining. Barbieri completed the day's scoring with 15:14 to go as Morris was credited with her second assist of the game on the game's final goal.

Maryland outshot Pacific, 38-3, forcing Beach to record 17 saves for the Tigers in the net.
