Stanford, Calif. - Third-ranked Maryland (3-0-0) scored three times in the second half for a 3-0 victory over Stanford (0-2-0) in the first game of an NCAA field hockey doubleheader on Tuesday at the Varsity Field Hockey Turf. California (1-1-0) knocked off previously unbeaten Delaware (2-1-0) with a 2-1 overtime victory in the second game of the doubleheader.
Maryland and Stanford played to a 0-0 first half tie before the Terrapins' Dina Rizzo finally broke through for the game's first goal, scoring unassisted with 22:44 to go in the contest. Maryland added insurance goals by Lucy Morris (unassisted) with 11:20 remaining and Sara Silvetti (assists Morris, Autumn Welsh) on a direct corner with 8:31 to go.
Stanford goalkeeper Rebecca Shapiro posted a game-high 18 saves.
In the nightcap, California's Elizabeth Harkins notched the game-winning goal with 9:49 to go in the first "sudden victory" overtime period, scoring during a 2-on-1 breakaway and on an assist by Amber Stockstill.
The Golden Bears had trailed 1-0 after Delaware's Juli Byrd broke the ice with 30:39 to go in the contest on an assist from Jessi Balmer. California tied the contest at 1-1 when Erin Robinson scored the Golden Bears' first goal of the season with assists from Danya Sawyer and Harkins on a direct corner with 24:13 to go.
Delaware edged the Golden Bears in shots, 12-10, while California goalkeeper Emily Rowen picked up a game-high six saves in a winning effort.
Stanford will continue its season-opening four-game homestand by hosting Michigan State this Friday (4:00 p.m.) and Fairfield on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
