Charlottesville, VA - The 10th-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team picked up their second win today with a 3-0 victory over Virginia at the 2001 Jefferson Cup Tournament in Charlottesville, Virginia. Game scores were 30-22, 30-20, 30-26.
In game one, Stanford staked a 10-4 lead after a service ace by freshman outside hitter Ogonna Nnamani. The Cavaliers closed the gap to 9-12 off of a Cardinal hitting error, but Stanford responded with a six point run, capped by a Tara Conrad/Logan Tom block to get to 18-9. A service ace by Conrad got Stanford to 22-13 before a string of Cardinal errors gave Virginia three points. The Cavaliers pulled to within five at 21-26, but two Ivy Ashley kills and a Virginia error got Stanford to game point. Ivy would notch a kill to give the Cardinals the win.
Stanford jumped out to a 12-5 lead and were never seriously threatened in the game. A block by Sara McGee and Anna Robinson put the Cardinals up 17-9 while a service ace by Logan Tom got Stanford to 21-14. Jennifer Harvey put down a kill to give the Cardinal a ten point advantage at 27-17. Tom knocked down a kill at 30-20 to put Stanford up two games to none.
The Cavaliers got a quick 6-2 lead in game two before the Cardinal closed to within two at 4-6 on a block by Ashley Ivy and Sara McGee. With Stanford trailing 6-11, the Cardinal put together a five point run to tie the game up. The game remained close until, at 26-24, the Cardinal scored three quick kills by Tara Conrad and Jennifer Hucke to get to 29-24. Ivy would seal the win for Stanford with a kill (30-26).
Stanford hit .255 for the match with 12 blocks. Logan Tom and Ashley Ivy led the match with 12 kills a piece. Ogonna Nnamani had 10 for the Cardinal. Tara Conrad had six blocks.
Virginia was led by Jenny Harmon's nine kills and Simona Kuipers' nine blocks.
Stanford will play Radford tomorrow at noon (EST) to close out the tournament.
