Charlottesville, VA - The 10th-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team won the 2001 Jefferson Cup Tournament today with a 3-0 win over Radford. Game scores were 30-19, 30-21, 30-28. Junior outside hitter Logan Tom was named Tourmament MVP while teammates Ashley Ivy and Ogonna Nnamani were All-Tournament selections.
With Stanford leading by two at 7-5, the Cardinal rallied off nine straight points to take a commading 16-5 lead. A block solo by Logan Tom got Stanford to 20-8 and a twelve point lead. At 23-16, an Ogonna Nnamani kill and two Highlander errors pushed the score to 26-16. Radford got as close as 19-27 before three straight points, including a kill by sophomore Sara Dukes, to get the win.
In game two, Radford jumped out to the early 5-3 lead before the Cardinal rallied off five points to take the lead. The game stayed fairly close at 12-10 until Stanford strung together four consecutive points to go ahead at 16-10. The Cardinal then got to 20-12 on an Ogonna Nnamani kill. At 23-17, three Stanford kills and a Radford error put the squad up by 10 at 27-17. Consecutive kills by Tara Conrad and Ashley Ivy would close out the game for Stanford at 30-21.
Game three remained close until the Cardinal opened up a seven point lead at 22-15 on a block by Conrad and Dukes. But the Highlanders rallied off seven straight points to tie up the game at 22-all. A block by Sara McGee and Ogonna Nnamani got Stanford to 28-24 and a Radford error put the Cardinal at match point. Stanford would hold on to win the game at the match at 30-28.
Tom led the Cardinal with 12 kills (12-0-22) for a .545 hitting percentage. Ogonna Nnamani also contributed 12 kills and six digs. Senior Tara Conrad led the squad with seven blocks for the match. Stanford hit .336 for the match while outblocking the Highlanders 11 to 1.
Radford was led by Laura Marcuson's 15 kills and eight digs. Sarah Gates contributed nine kills and four digs.
Stanford will next face Penn State in a midweek match on Tuesday in State College, Pa.
