Oxford, Ohio - Stanford closed out a long road trip with a convincing 4-0 victory over Miami (Ohio) in a non-conference NCAA field hockey game on Thursday. The two schools observed a moment of silence prior to the game in light of this week's tragic events.

Melissa Stai and Liz Ott both scored a goal and picked up an assist to lead the Cardinal. Stanford improved to 4-6 with the victory, while the loss was the fifth straight for the 2-5 Red Hawks.

Stai, who now leads Stanford with three goals this season, put the Cardinal on the board when she scored on a Stanford penalty corner with 17:48 remaining in the first half. Ott was credited with an assist on the goal. Stanford goalkeeper Rebecca Shaprio was credited with a solo shutout, while Emily Zander also contributed to the blanking by holding the Red Hawks scoreless over the final 18:10.

Erica Swesey gave the Cardinal a 2-0 lead before halftime when she scored with an assist from Christina Williams with 8:22 to go in the first half. Second half Cardinal goals came from Ott on an assist from Katy Quarles (24:25) and Amanda Billmyer (13:24) on assists from Stai and Sara Herman.

Stanford outshot Miami (Ohio), 24-4, and had a 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Miami (Ohio) starting goalkeeper Marie Vaughn recorded 11 saves, while Julie Nelson and Karen Preikszas each had one defensive save.

Stanford will next be in action when the Cardinal hosts its Alumni on Saturday, September 22 (11:00 a.m.).
