Pullman, Wash. - The fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team opened the 2001 Pac-10 season with a 3-0 sweep of Washington State tonight in Pullman, Washington, before a crowd of 1,299. Game scores were 30-28, 30-26, 30-22.
The Cardinal improve to 7-0, 1-0 in Pac-10 play while the Cougars fall to 5-3, 0-1 in league action. The 7-0 start by Stanford is its best since 1994 when they began the season 20-0.
Game one was a back and forth battle between the two teams. There were 15 ties during the game. With the score knotted at 28-all, senior Sara Sandrik tallied her first service ace on the night to get Stanford to game point. Freshman Ogonna Nnamani would record a kill to seal the game for the Cardinal at 30-28. Nnamani had seven kills and hit .455 in game one for Stanford.
Game two saw the Cardinal jump out to a 7-2 lead but WSU would pull within two at 5-7 on a block solo. The two teams would trade points and both teams would put together six point runs but in the end, Stanford would edge the Cougars 30-26 on a block solo by setter Robyn Lewis.
Stanford came out of the break to dominate game three, hitting .410 for the game. Several Cougar miscues and tough serving by the Cardinal sealed the win for Stanford at 30-22.
Junior Logan Tom had a match-high 16 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Ogonna Nnamani followed with 15 kills and three blocks. Senior setter Robyn Lewis tallied 44 assists, three kills, two blocks and nine digs on the night. Sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Harvey added nine kills and three blocks.
For the Cougars, Adrian Hankoff had 12 kills and six digs while teammate Zanda Bautre added eight kills and three blocks.
Stanford is next in action tomorrow night against Washington at 7 p.m. in the Bank of America Arena in Seattle, Washington.
