Berkeley, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team notched a 3-0 sweep of conference opponent California tonight in Berkeley, Calif. before a crowd of 1,425. Game scores were 30-27, 30-19, 30-20. The Cardinal improve to 9-1, 3-0 in the Pac-10 while the Golden Bears fall to 3-5, 0-3 in league play.
Stanford improved its all-time record against California to 48-3 with tonight's victory.
The Cardinal opened a solid 7-2 lead in game one which Cal quickly closed to 6-7 on three Golden Bear kills and a Stanford hitting error. The Cardinal pushed their lead to 16-12 on a block by Ogonna Nnamani and Sara McGee and pulled ahead 20-14 on a Logan Tom kill forcing a Cal timeout. After the timeout, California pulled to within three at 19-22 but two Golden Bear errors and a Cardinal block by Jennifer Harvey and Tom put Stanford up 24-19. California would pull within one at 23-24, however, the Cardinal would build a three point cushion at 26-23 and again at 28-25. Stanford reached game point on a Sara Duke's service ace while a Cal service error would give them the win at 30-27.
In game two, Stanford opened up an 11-6 lead on a kill by setter Robyn Lewis and pull ahead by 10 points at 18-8 on a Tara Conrad kill. California was unable to make up any significant ground on the Cardinal and called a timeout at 18-26 after a Logan Tom service ace. Stanford reached game point on a kill by freshman Jennifer Hucke and won 30-19 on a block by Dukes and McGee.
Game three started much the same as the second game. The Cardinal sprinted to an 11-5 lead on a kill by Ogonna Nnamani and extended it to 13-6 on a service ace by Nnamani. Stanford went up by nine points at 17-8 on a Tara Conrad kill and pushed the lead to 10 at 25-15 on a kill by Jennifer Hucke. California pulled to within eight at 19-28 on a service ace but could get no closer. A kill by Sara Sandrik got Stanford to game and match point at 29-20. Nnamani sealed the deal with a kill for the victory at 30-20.
The Cardinal were led by Logan Tom and Ogonna Nnamani who had 12 and 11 kills respectively. Emily Lawrence added 10 digs to Stanford's effort. Sara McGee led the match with five blocks while adding four kills. Tom and Nnamani each notched two service aces on the night.
The Golden Bears were led by Candace McNamee's nine kills, 13 assists and two blocks. Ashleigh Turner had 12 digs on the night for Cal followed by Reena Pardiwala's eight.
Stanford returns to action on Tuesday, October 2, to take on nationally-ranked Santa Clara at 7 p.m. in Santa Clara, Calif.
