Santa Clara, Calif. - The No. 8 Stanford women's soccer team defeated San Diego State, 2-1, in the first game of the Santa Clara adidas Classic at the Buck Shaw Stadium Friday night. With the win, the Cardinal move to 6-0 on the year and second-year head coach Andy Nelson won this 100th career match.

The game remained scoreless through the first 70 minutes, despite Stanford outshooting the Aztecs 11-6 in the first half. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) finally broke into the scoring column in the second half in the 70th minute to put the Cardinal up 1-0. Ward took the ball from the left flank, rounded the corner toward the goal and fired the ball through the San Diego State goalkeeper.

At 80:58, Amy Grady (Pawcatuck, CT) played a ball to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) who then headed it to Ward. Ward then blasted the ball to the left post and found its way to the back of the net for her second goal of the game to give the Cardinal the 2-0 advantage.

The Aztecs did manage one score at the 88:10 mark on a Kim Castellanos goal.

For the game, Stanford outshot San Diego 22-12. Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) recorded five saves for the Cardinal.

In his second season on The Farm Nelson has led Stanford to a 6-0 start, and a 14-6-1 overall record last year. With his 100th career victory tonight, he currently has an overall record of 100-35-10.

The Cardinal will return to action Sunday, Sept. 30 in the second day of the Santa Clara adidas Classic. Stanford will face SMU at 11 a.m. at the Buck Shaw Stadium.
