Santa Clara, Calif. - The No. 8 Stanford women's soccer team defeated Southern Methodist 4-0 Sunday afternoon in the third match of the Santa Clara adidas Classic at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Cardinal improve to 7-0 and are off to their best start since 1994.

Stanford used a balance scoring attack, with four different Cardinal recording goals. Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) found the back of the net first on a pass from Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA). Myers scored her third goal of the season at the 24-minute mark to put the Cardinal up 1-0.

At 32:16, Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) crossed the ball to Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) who beat the keeper on a high shot. Stanford then went into halftime outshooting SMU 11-6 and with the 2-0 lead.

Just ten minutes into the second half, the Cardinal struck again. Carlson hit a pass over the Mustang defenders to Wallis. Wallis then took the ball and beat the keeper one-on-one for her seven goal of the season at 56:04.

Stanford's final score at 68:46 was set up by Myers and Brittany Oliveira (Los Angeles, CA) to freshman Lisa Engel (Ventura, CA). Engel scored her first collegiate goal off a rebound from the left side to give the Cardinal the 4-0 victory.

Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) and Myers teamed up for Stanford's second shutout of the season. Walsh also recorded four saves.

"It was a good game for our team in the sense that I felt SMU was just a good opponent for us at this point," said head coach Andy Nelson. "They really challenged us physically. I thought we did what we wanted to do, as far as how we were trying to play. It was a good performance today."

Senior Amy Sauer (Spring, TX), Wallis and Ward were all members of the Santa Clara adidas All-Classic Team.

The Cardinal return to the field on Friday, for a Bay Area match-up against Santa Clara. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at Maloney Field, where Stanford will look to extend its 13-home game winning streak.
