Bloomington, Ind. - Stanford (3-4) outlasted Indiana (0-4) for a 1-0 win as the Cardinal claimed victory in penalty stroke play of an NCAA field hockey game on Friday at Mellencamp Pavilion. Stanford converted on three of its first four penalty strokes in its first series, while Indiana made good on only one of four attempts. Erica Swesey, Tysie Sawyer and Liz Ott had successful penalty strokes for the Cardinal. Kimberly Nash was the only Indiana player to succeed.
In penalty stroke play, teams alternate penalty strokes until one team has more successful penalty strokes than the other can possibly reach during its five-stroke series. The winner of a penalty stroke series is awarded with one team goal. The first team to win a penalty stroke series wins the contest. Individual goals are not awarded.
After Indiana's first penalty stroke by Brooke Magers was unsuccessful, Swesey had a successful penalty stroke to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead in the first series. Indiana tied the series at 1-1 on Nash's successful attempt but the Cardinal immediately reclaimed a 2-1 advantage on a successful attempt by Sawyer. Indiana's Claire Loots was unsuccessful on the next attempt for the Hoosiers, giving the Cardinal a chance to win the contest but Christina Williams was unsuccessful on Stanford's next attempt. Indiana missed a chance to tie the score when Ryan Woosley missed on the Hoosiers' fourth attempt and then the Cardinal finally wrapped up the game on a successful penalty stroke from Ott.
Stanford outshot Indiana, 24-7, and posted a 29-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Stanford, which snapped a two-game losing streak with the victory, will continue its season-long seven-game road trip on Sunday (1:00 p.m., CT) with a neutral site game versus Iowa at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
