PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Sophomore Lauren Barnikow (Clifton, N.J.) and freshman Erin Burdette (Ojai, Calif.) continued their stellar play Wednesday during the Singles Qualifying Round of the Riviera Women's All-American Championships at Pacific Palisades.
Both won their third singles match of the tournament and will advance to Thursday's main draw. Barnikow bested Tulsa's Aleksandra Durska 6-3, 7-6 and Burdette outdueled No. 6 seed Julie Rotondi of North Carolina 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. Barnikow and Burdette, ranked Nos. 73 and 93 nationally in singles, picked up two victories Tuesday afternoon to secure a berth.
Senior Keiko Tokuda (Clifton, N.J.) was upset by Fresno State's Chloe Carlotti, considered to be one of this year's top freshman recruits, 6-2, 6-3 Wednesday- falling one victory short of advancing after winning her previous two matches.
Barnikow and Burdette also teamed up in the doubles portion of the tournament. The duo, ranked No. 16 in the preseason rankings, racked up three consecutive victories to advance to the main draw for doubles. The Stanford tandem defeated Jessica Roland and Marjorie Terburgh of Texas A&M 8-5, edged UCLA rivals Sara Walker and Megan Bradley 8-6 and dispatched of North Carolina's Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis 8-5.
The main draw was scheduled to be announced late Wednesday evening, which includes Cardinal netters Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, Fla.) and Gabriela Lastra (Reno, Nev.)- who are looking to become the first duo to ever repeat as doubles champions at the tournament.
