Corvallis, Ore. - The No. 9 Stanford women's soccer team got back on the winning track this afternoon with a win over Oregon State, 2-1, on Paul Lorenz Field. With the victory the Cardinal (8-1) stay unbeaten against the Beavers, winning nine consecutive matches.
Stanford got on the board first in the 26th minute on a Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) goal. Sanderson's first shot hit the crossbar, but was able to control the ball and fire a shot into the open net giving the Cardinal the 1-0 lead.
Two minutes after halftime, Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) put Stanford up 2-0 on assists from Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) and Sanderson at 47:33. Ward scored her seventh goal of the season when she hit the right corner of the net from 25-feet out, past the Oregon State keeper.
Oregon State did mange one score at 61:31 by Courtney Carter off a direct kick, to make the score 2-1.
The Cardinal were outshot by the Beavers 9-10, but Stanford held the edge on corner kicks 5-3. Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) had two saves for Stanford.
Stanford's game with Oregon State was televised by Fox Sports Northwest and will be shown on a tape-delay basis on Monday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. The Cardinal continue their Pac-10 road trip on Sunday in Eugene to face Oregon at 1 p.m. on Pape' Field.
