Stanford, Calif. - The 2002 Stanford Baseball team outlasted the Cardinal Alumni, 17-15, in the 2001 Alumni Game on Sunday at Sunken Diamond. The 2002 Stanford Baseball team trailed 13-11 before scoring five times in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead for good as a three-run homer by Steve Gantenbein capped off the inning. The teams combined for 32 runs and 41 hits in the exhibition contest.
Billy Paganetti (4-5, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) had four of Stanford's 23 hits. Gantenbein (2-4, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) led seven Stanford players with two hits each. Chris O'Riordan (2-3, HR, RBI) also homered for the Cardinal, while Jonny Ash (2-2, SF, RBI), Andy Topham (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI), Donny Lucy (2-3, RBI), Carlos Quentin (2-5) and Danny Putnam (2-6) had two hits each.
Current Kansas City Royals players A.J. Hinch (3-4, 2 2B, RBI) and David McCarty (2-3, 2 HR, 3 RBI) led the Alumni attack. Paul Zuvella (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI), Mike Robbins (2-2, 2 RBI), John Verducci (2-3) and Mike Wodnicki (2-3) had two hits each.
Drew Ehrlich picked up the victory, while John Yandle was charged with the loss. J.D. Willcox recorded the save.
In the 2001 Stanford Old-Timers Alumni Game, the home squad edged the visitors, 1-0, in a four-inning contest.
Dick Borchers doubled to lead off the bottom of the second inning and scored on an RBI-single by Gary Pitchford for the game's only run.
Bob Marshall was credited with the win, while Mike Williamson took the loss. Ken Grolle, who started the game for the home team, returned in the fourth inning to pick up the save.
"This was a fun event, and it means a lot to Stanford Baseball," said head coach Mark Marquess. "Our Alumni has contributed so much to our baseball program over the years."
The 2002 Stanford Baseball team continues fall practice through Sunday, November 4. The Cardinal, which has finished second at the College World Series for each of the last two seasons, will open the 2002 regular season by hosting Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series at Sunken Diamond from February 1-3, 2002.
