Eugene, Ore. - After winning its Pac-10 opener on Friday at Oregon State 2-1, the No. 9 Stanford women's soccer team won its second consecutive conference game with a 3-1 victory over Oregon this afternoon on Pape' Field. The Cardinal recorded a season-high 30 shots and improved to 9-1 on the year.
Stanford wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, scoring two goals in the first 30 minutes of the game. Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) scored the game's first goal at 15:06 on a rebound shot from eight yards out. Wallis scored her eight goal of the season off of Brittany Oliveira's (Los Angeles, CA) near score.
The Cardinal kept the pressure on the Ducks early, scoring their second goal at 30:43. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) passed the ball to Christy LaPierre (Gold River, CA), who found the back of the net from 25 yards out. The goal was LaPierre's first of the season and gave Stanford the 2-0 lead.
Oregon answered twenty seconds later when Chalise Baysa scored from six yards out to hold the score at 2-1 going into the halftime break.
After firing 22 shots in the first half, Stanford could only manage one more score in the final 45 minutes of play. Ward took the corner kick for the Cardinal at 85:41 and played a cross to Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA), who headed it in for the final score of the game.
Stanford finished the game with a season-high 30 shots, 14 being shots-on-goal. Senior goalkeeper Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) recorded five saves for the Cardinal.
The Cardinal stand at 2-0 in the Pac-10 heading into this weekend's home matches against Washington State and Washington. Stanford will face the Cougars on Friday, Oct. 19 at 5 p.m. and the Huskies on Sunday, Oct. 21 at 1p.m. Both matches will be held on Maloney Field.
