No. 8 Women's Soccer Defeats Washington State 2-0

Stanford, Calif. - The No. 8 Stanford women's soccer team improved to a perfect 3-0 in the Pac-10 after defeating Washington State, 2-0, Friday night at Maloney Field. The Cardinal move to 10-1 on the season and recorded their third shutout of the year.

Both teams battled back and forth to start the game, but the Cardinal broke into the scoring column at 25:55. Senior defender Amy Sauer (Spring, TX) played a ball to Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA), who passed it off to Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA). Ward then took the ball and lofted it past the Washington State keeper to put Stanford up 1-0.

Despite having only four shots in the first half, Stanford came out of the break pressuring the Cougar defense. After a few near goals by the Cardinal, Becky Myers (St. Charles, IL) scored her fourth goal of the season at 78:32. Myers fired a shot past the keeper in the box off an assist from Ward, making the score 2-0.

Stanford finished the game with 14 shots, while holding Washington State to nine. Goalkeeper Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) recorded five saves and her second shutout of the season.

The Cardinal will next take the field on Sunday, Oct. 21, against defending Pac-10 Champion No. 20 Washington. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. on Maloney Field.
