Stanford, Calif. - The fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team won its 10th consecutive home match tonight with a 3-0 sweep of Washington State. Game scores were 30-21, 30-28, 30-23.
The Cardinal improved their record to 16-2, 9-1 in the Pac-10 while the Cougars fall to 10-8 on the year, 5-6 in league action.
Stanford roared to a 7-2 lead in game one on a Cougar hitting error, then extended the lead to 14-5 on a block assist by Sara McGee and Ogonna Nnamani. A service ace by Emily Lawrence gave the Cardinal the 19-9 advantage but WSU closed to within six at 13-19 on four consecutive points. Stanford came right back to go up 25-14 on a block by Nnamani and Tara Conrad. The Cardinal reached game point on a kill by Logan Tom and a second Tom kill gave Stanford the 30-21 win.
The Cardinal took the 9-5 lead on a block by Anna Robinson and Sara McGee. The Cougars closed to within three at 10-13 on a block of their own but Stanford responded with six straight points, going up 19-11 on a service ace by Sara Sandrik. With the Cardinal up by six at 26-20, WSU rallied to pull within one at 25-26, but a Tom kill and a Cougar error gave Stanford the 28-25 edge. Washington State got two quick kills to once again pull within one at 27-28, forcing a Stanford timeout. A kill by Tom got the Cardinal to game point and an Ogonna Nnamani kill put Stanford on top 30-28.
Mirroring game one, Stanford jumped out to the 7-2 lead to open game three, aided by two Michelle Chambers service aces. The Cardinal maintained the lead and reached 16-11 on a kill by Sara Dukes. Stanford went up 21-15 on a kill by Jennifer Harvey but three straight WSU points forced a Stanford timeout at 21-18. The Cardinal came out and went up by six at 27-21 on a block by Tara Conrad and Anna Robinson. A block solo by Conrad gave Stanford game and match point. Logan Tom sealed the deal with a kill to give the Cardinal the 30-23 win.
Stanford was led by Logan Tom's 16 kills and 10 digs. Sara McGee tied her career-high in kills with 14 on the night while Ogonna Nnamani added 12 kills. Sara Sandrik and Michelle Chambers led the match with two service aces each. Tara Conrad tallied a match-high eight blocks on the evening.
Stanford is next in action on Tuesday, October 23, at 7 p.m. against nationally-ranked Pacific in Maples Pavilion.
