Stanford, Calif. - The No. 8 women's soccer team used a second half come-back to defeat No. 20 Washington, 2-1, this afternoon at Maloney Field in front of 883 fans. Junior Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) scored the game-winning goal for the Cardinal at 82:16 to improve Stanford to 11-1-0 overall, 4-0-0 in conference play.
The Huskies came out pressuring the Cardinal defense to start the match, and scored the game's first goal at 12:47. Caroline Putz lofted the ball from 35 yards out, just above the outstretched arms of Stanford goalkeeper Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA).
Stanford then put the offensive pressure on, firing seven shots in the final 30 minutes of the first half. Despite scoring chances, the Cardinal went into the halftime down 0-1.
Five minutes into the second half, sophomore defender Alison Pabon (Dallas, TX) played a cross to freshman Natalie Sanderson (Ventura, CA) in the middle of the field. Sanderson then tapped the ball to sophomore Allyson Marquand (Irvine, CA) who fired a shot past the keeper from 20 yards out tying the match at 1-1. Marquand, who started for the first time on Maloney Field since the 1999 season due to injuries, netted her first goal of the season.
The Cardinal had a scoring opportunity in the 69th minute, when Wallis' shot hit the post and bounced away from the goal. Stanford used tough defense and two saves by Walsh to keep the score knotted at 1-1.
At 82:16, Kelsey Carlson (Citrus Heights, CA) made a nice pass to Wallis, who fired a shot that deflected off the Husky goalkeeper and found the back of the net giving Stanford the 2-1 advantage. The goal marked Wallis' ninth of the season and her fourth game-winning score of the year.
Stanford outshot Washington 12-8, with seven shots on goal. Walsh finished the game with four saves and earned her 11th victory of the year.
The Cardinal will remain home this week to prepare for two big matches next Friday and Sunday. Stanford will battle No. 7 Saint Mary's on Oct. 26 at 5 p.m. and No. 16 California on Oct. 28 at noon, both matches at Maloney Field.
