Top-Ranked/Unbeaten Water Polo Team Defeats Second-Ranked UCLA

Oct. 27, 2001

Stanford, Ca - Tony Azevedo scored three goals and Peter Hudnut added two scores to lead the top-ranked Stanford Cardinal water polo team to a convincing 8-3 victory over second-ranked UCLA in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Center.

Azevedo, a freshman and a member of the 2000 United States Olympic Team, opened Stanford's scoring at 6:06 of the first period. A UCLA score by Alfonso Tucay tied the game at 3:17 of the first period, but that was the closest the two-time defending NCAA champions would get as Onno Koelman and Azevedo added goals to give the Cardinal a 3-1 after one period of play.

Azevedo, who is one of the nation's leading scorers with 46 goals, notched his third goal of the game at 2:47 of the third period to give Stanford an unsurmountable 8-2 lead.

Nick Ellis collected eleven saves as Stanford increased its record to 14-0 and 6-0 in the MPSF. UCLA fell to 9-3.
