Stanford, Calif. - The No. 6 Stanford women's soccer team and No. 7 Saint Mary's battled to a 0-0 double overtime tie in a non-conference match on Friday night at Maloney Field. The Cardinal move to 11-1-1 (4-0 Pac-10) on the season, heading into Sunday's match against Pac-10 rival California.
The match quickly became defense oriented, with either team getting a good scoring opportunity in regulation. Both teams threatened toward the end of the second period, but no one could find the back of the net. Stanford outshot the Gaels 14-8 in the first 90 minutes of the match.
No mistakes were made as each team recorded just one shot in the first overtime period, sending the game into its second overtime.
The Cardinal finally had their best scoring chance at 113:24, when Becky Myers ' (St. Charles, IL) header was blocked by the Saint Mary's goalkeeper. One minute later, the Gael keeper also had another great save on Marcia Wallis ' (Los Gatos, CA) shot. Stanford had a few more opportunities but could not connect before the clock ran out, ending the 120-minute match at 0-0 tie.
Stanford managed five shots in the second overtime, and outshot the Gael's 20-9 for the game. The Cardinal recorded seven shots on goal to Saint Mary's one. Wallis lead the way for Stanford with six shots. The Cardinal has not been shutout this season, with the most recent coming last year in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament against BYU (5-0).
The Cardinal will return to action when they host Bay Area and Pac-10 rival No. 22 California on Sunday. Stanford will put its perfect 4-0 conference record on the line at noon on Maloney Field.
