Stanford, Calif. - Despite a physical game, the No. 6 Stanford women's soccer team (12-1-1) scored two goals in the second half to defeat No. 22 California (10-5-1) on Sunday afternoon at Maloney Field in front of 1,246 fans. With their fifth consecutive conference victory, the Cardinal stand in first place of the Pac-10 with four games remaining.
Both teams were held scoreless the first 45 minutes of play, with Stanford outshooting the Golden Bears 5-1. Callie Withers (Los Altos Hills, CA) nearly put one through at 15:11 from 35 yards out, but the Cal keeper was able to push the ball above the net.
Stanford continued its offensive pressure in the second half and it finally paid off at 67:09. Marcie Ward (Alamo, CA) took the corner kick and played a perfect cross to Withers, who was able to head the ball in for the score. The goal marks Withers' fifth of the season and the fourth from Ward on either a corner or cross.
Three minutes later Marcia Wallis (Los Gatos, CA) stole a pass between two California defenders, took the ball, beat the lone defender and then beat the keeper one-on-one putting Stanford up 2-0.
The match continued to be physical, as four yellow cards were issued along with 35 total fouls. The Golden Bears managed one score at 87:43 on a goal by Krysti Whalen, ending the Cardinal shutout.
Stanford outshoot the Bears 15-5 for the game, and recorded eight shots on goal. Carrie Walsh (Los Gatos, CA) picked up her 12th win of the season, while also tallying three saves.
The Cardinal have four conference games remaining, controlling their own destiny toward a Pac-10 championship. Stanford will next travel to Arizona to face the Sun Devils and the Wildcats this Friday and Sunday. The Cardinal will play Arizona State on Nov. 2 and Arizona on Nov. 4.
