Seattle, Wash. - The fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team ran its record to 8-0 with a 3-1 win tonight over the Washington Huskies. Game scores were 24-30, 30-27, 30-27. The Cardinal are now 8-0, 2-0 in the Pac-10 while the Huskies fall to 6-3, 1-1 in league play.
The two teams battled back and forth with neither squad gaining more than a two point advantage. With the score knotted at 13-all, Washington went on a five point run to go up 18-13. A block assist by Robyn Lewis and Jennifer Harvey got Stanford to within three at 15-18, but the Huskies pressed on taking a 25-20 advantage on a Paige Benjamin kill. After a quick kill by Ashley Ivy, Washington extended their lead to 27-21 and reached game point on a Cardinal ball handling error. Stanford held off three game points before falling 30-24. The Cardinal dropped only their third game in 24 games played this season while hitting only .091.
Stanford jumped out to a 4-1 lead to open game two but the Huskies tied up the game at nine-all. The Cardinal got three quick kills from Jennifer Harvey, Tara Conrad and Logan Tom to go up 12-9. With Stanford leading 15-14, a kill by Ashley Ivy and two consecutive blocks by Ivy and Sara McGee gave the Cardinal a 18-14 advantage. They then extended the lead to 26-19 on a Husky hitting error. Washington pulled to within three at 25-28 but could get no closer. A kill by McGee sealed the win for Stanford at 30-27.
The Huskies open game three with a 5-0 lead but the Cardinal tied up the game at eight-all on a Washington hitting error. The game remained close with Stanford leading 18-17 when a kill and service aced by Logan Tom gave the Cardinal with 20-17 advantage. Washington fought back and took the lead at 25-24 on a kill. Stanford answered with a kill and block to take the lead. The two teams tied again at 26-all, but the Cardinal rallied off three straight points to reach game point at 29-26. A kill by Tom would give Stanford the 30-27 win and 2-1 advantage in the match.
Game four proved to be just as tough as game three with the both teams trading points and the lead throughout the game. With Stanford up 26-23, Washington rallied off five points to go up 28-26. But the Cardinal fought back to tie up the game on a block solo by Jennifer Harvey. Stanford would hold off a Washington game point at 29-28. The Huskies would hold off three Cardinal match points before falling 33-31 on a Ogonna Nnamani kill.
Stanford was led by Logan Tom's 25 kills and 20 digs. Freshman Ogonna Nnamani added 16 kills and 13 digs to the effort. Setter Robyn Lewis had 57 assists and four blocks on the night while Jennifer Harvey added seven blocks. Sophomore Sara McGee had six kills and four blocks.
Lisa Underhill and Allison Richardson had 20 kills each to lead the Huskies while Paige Benjamin tallied eight blocks.
