Top-Ranked/Unbeaten Stanford Water Polo Team Downs California

Berkeley, Ca - Freshman Tony Azevedo scored three goals to lead the top-ranked Stanford Cardinal water polo team to an 8-4 victory over previously unbeaten California in a non-league game on Saturday at the Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Pasi Dutton and Jeff Nesmith each added two goals for the Cardinal which increased its season record to 5-0. California fell to 4-1.

The Cardinal jumped to a 2-0 first period lead, and extended the margin to 5-1 at halftime. Cardinal junior goalkeeper Nick Ellis collected two saves.

Stanford University will return home on Oct. 12 (3:00 p.m.) to face Loyola Marymount. Then on Oct. 13-14, Stanford will host the NorCal Water Polo Tournament, featuring many of the top water polo teams in the United States. The 15-team tournament features #1 Stanford, #2 USC, #3 UCLA, #4 Pepperdine, #5 California, #6 Long Beach State, #7 UC Irvine, #8 UC Santa Barbara, #9 UC San Diego, #10 Pacific, #11 Loyola Marymount, #17 Cal Baptist, #17 Air Force, #20 UC Davis and Santa Clara. Stanford will begin play on Oct. 13 (9:15 a.m.) against Santa Clara. If Stanford wins, the Cardinal will face either Pepperdine or Cal Baptist at 1:45 p.m. The championship game will be played on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 4:45 p.m.
